Ellis Marsalis Center for Music

Community Center
Our building will also serve as a community center for residents of Musicians' Village. Our facilities will be open for community meetings, cultural forums and other events.

Recording Facilities
Among the residents of the Musicians' Village are many elder statesmen and women of the New Orleans music community whose work has seldom been documented on recordings. Additionally, the wide range of musical genres played by Village residents (Classical, Jazz, Zydeco, Blues, R&B) has already given birth to unprecedented cross-genre collaborations. The Center features state-of-the-art audio and video recording facilities available for use on a sliding scale by Village residents and other members of the New Orleans music community. Recordings will include musical and spoken word performances and oral histories.

Performance Space
The performance hall is designed to be flexible and to accommodate a variety of seating arrangements from supper club seating with tables, to theatre seating in rows, to standing room only performances. Our 170-person capacity fills a need in New Orleans for a high quality, small venue. Our goal is to provide Village residents with a performance venue of their own; to make available to Village residents quality concerts, plays and movies virtually at their door step; and to provide the broader New Orleans community with a small, high quality venue for their use at a competitive price. Performers on our stage will include national and international performers in genres including theatre, dance and music.

Production Training
The performance and recording facilities of the Center will also be used to provide Village residents with training in the technical skills required to present performances. For younger residents, we envision the production training program as an apprenticeship leading to possible careers in audio, lighting, and other areas of production.

Musicians' Assistance Program
Musicians are more likely to be successful if they develop the skills necessary to take an active role in their own career development. The Musicians' Assistance Program will be a resource center staffed by volunteers with expertise in the various legal and management aspects of the music business.
