Sawyer grew up in Uptown and comes from a line of musicians — his great-grandfather, Louis D. James, played with Buddy Bolden and Sawyer is cousins with Leon Bridges. He picked up the trumpet at 9, and over the years has shared stages with Wynton Marsalis, Lalah Hathaway and Harry Connick Jr.
